Wow. I was really beginning to think that it was impossible for me to take off any more weight, but after seeing how much thinner and healthier that couple is, I’m motivated to make today a healthy one. Their story is truly amazing.
Sometimes, it takes a wake up call to get your attention. This man’s wake up call was not being to have a CT scan b/c of his weight. My wake up call was when I couldn’t tie my shoes b/c of back pain. That’s when I joined TOPS.
What I got most out of the article was thinking, “That could be me!” I’d like to have those before and after pics someday!
Darcy, I know what you mean about having something telling you when you haven’t moved enough. I have a Wii Fit, and it not only tells me how many days it’s been since I last used it, but also makes snarky comments. For example, on the balance exercises, it sometimes calls me “unbalanced.” It’s pretty bad when your electronics insult you.
What I like about the Fit Bit vs. the less expensive models is that it works so well. It has a gyroscope in it, which increases the accuracy. It even will log my steps on the elliptical.
Also, on the web site, you can have friends and see how many steps they have. This way, you and your friends can encourage and motivate (or compete with 🙂 each other.
Price is the main down side, but it has been a good investment in my health for me. If anyone decides to get a fitbit, let me know so that we can be “friends” on their site.
Has anyone found other pedometers or other health/fitness related gadgetry that works well and is less expensive? Having an alternative would be nice, too.
Being depressed is one of my biggest triggers, and I eat all those comfort foods. Mine are usually loaded with both fat and sugar. I read in Scientific American how high fat and sugary foods stimulate reward centers in your brain just like opiates and other addictive drugs do. Mice would eat the high fat and sugary foods even when they knew there were negative consequences. (The mice received an electrical shock.) I can identify with that because I, too, eat those kinds of foods even when I know they are bad for my health and self esteem.
To combat this, I try to exercise because it also stimulates the reward centers of the brain and releases feel-good endorphins, but it suppresses my appetite. I really struggle when I can’t exercise regularly.
Note to self: Must avoid bar fights 😉

You must be logged in to view attached files.I’ve heard of quinoa, but haven’t ever tried it. Does this salad taste anything like pasta salad? I love pasta salad, and I’m thinking the quinoa might be more nutritious. I’ll have to try it!
Way to go, Darcy! I have been having trouble getting in my exercise lately, but you’re doing even the stuff you don’t want to do, and it motivates me. I WILL exercise today, even if only a little.

I call frozen dinners and other similar items “emergency meals,” and try to always have some on hand to avoid eating out. I’ll have to try Amy’s brand. Do you get them at Wal-Mart?
Another emergency meal I use is sort of a tuna casserole. I take one of those microwavable mac ‘n’ cheese cups and make it according to the package directions. Then, I stir in a can of tuna. That’s it. Very filling for the number of calories.
You’re right, Darcy. I know that when I have gotten cards and letters, it has made me want to come back and not give up. It’s also nice just to know that someone is thinking of you and will go to the effort to cheer you up.
You’ve moved from “pre-contemplation” to “contemplation.” That’s progress! Where do you do yoga?
I did legs today, too. Mine are a little wobbly this evening, but I know eventually they will be stronger!
