Jana

About Jana

I didn't know how much I loved dogs until I brought home my first Miniature Pinscher, Zeus, more than a decade ago. I fell in love with him the minute I laid eyes on him. Even though Zeus is now waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge, I think of him often. Currently, I have two Min Pins, Athena and Nano, who bring love, joy, and lots of energy into our home. My dogs are a big part of my life and are very special to me. I don’t think the human-dog relationship is comparable to any other. Every day is a journey as I learn from them and vice versa. Jana Comer has an M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In addition, she is an avid reader of scientific literature and is especially interested in the evolution of dogs, dog genetics, and dog behavior.

Betty led us in a game of BINGO.

At our March 20, 2014 meeting, Betty led us in a game of bingo. The cards had weight loss terms on them. The terms included the following:  nutrition, inspiration, choice, menus, hope, etc. What a great way to lighten up some of these terms with which we struggle every day. Thanks, Betty!

Linda showed us how to make paper boxes from scrapbook paper. By shopping around, you can find inexpensive scrapbook paper. In addition, folding paper/origami can keep your hands busy so that you don’t reach into that bag of chips! The pretty boxes that result are an added plus.

Meet Sharon, Our Newest TOPS

Welcome Sharon!

Sharon Delaware is our newest TOPS member.

Sharon Delaware is our newest TOPS member.

Our TOPS chapter welcomes a new member, Sharon Delaware. Sharon has been around the world, and we are glad that she has found her way to Stillwater and our chapter. Read about her journeys, below.

Meet Sharon
Sharon was born in Kentucky and grew up in West Virginia. Her father was a coal miner and her mother was a house wife. She graduated high school in 1964 and went to work for the U.S. Dept of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. She took an assignment to the American Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina. When she returned to D.C., she had plans to attend college and was able to do that on a part-time basis for several years. She transferred to the Treasury Dept. and worked overseas at the American Embassy in London, U.K. for one tour of duty. Upon return, she met her husband, Bob, and had their daughter. At that time, she transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency where she was able to work part-time in order to spend more time as a mom. Her husband planned to retire from his government job with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1993 when their daughter was 12 years old. Fortunately, Sharon was able to take an early retirement and they moved to Prescott, Arizona in July 1993. She continued to work part-time for the school system until their daughter graduated high school. They moved to OK in late 2000 to be near her husband’s family (due to illness) and returned to AZ in June 2005, where they planned to live out their lives. Their daughter finished college in AZ, met her husband and brought him here to meet the extensive family. “He fell in love with the state and they made plans to move here, but would not leave us behind,” says Sharon. Sharon and her family all moved to Stillwater in Sep 2012. Sharon and her husband are devoted to their 21-month-old grandson, and they see him often. They attend the Crosspointe Free Will Baptist church where they sing in a small group and are making new friends.

How to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle

The Mindful Eating Cycle

Bert discussed mindful eating during the program portion of our meeting.

Bert discussed mindful eating during the program portion of our meeting.

Last week, we discussed the Mindful Eating Cycle. By answering the six questions below, we can create awareness about our eating decisions, and that is “the first step to permanently changing the way you eat.”

Ask Yourself…

  • Why do I eat?
  • When do I want to eat?
  • What do I eat?
  • How do I eat?
  • How much do I eat?
  • Where do I invest my energy?

Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle

In last weeks program, we also learned about three common eating patterns:

  • Instinctive eating
  • Overeating
  • Restrictive eating

People often switch back and forth between overeating and restrictive eating patterns, which creates the eat-repent-repeat cycle.

Mindful Eating

How can we break this vicious cycle? We eat mindfully–with “intention and attention.”

The Bottom Line

“You’re in charge. Strive for balance, variety, and moderation, not just in the way you eat, but in the way you live your life.”

Thanks, Bert, for presenting such a thought provoking program.
